This is Derby's first bird reserve, and it's a bit of a tip! In fact it has protected a wide range of bird species that have found an old landfill site rather to their liking. Now skylarks, lapwing, reed bunting and sand martin can all be watched from the comfort of your car.

Partner: Derby Museum & Art Gallery

Address: The Sanctuary, rear of Park and Ride Car Park, off Royal Way, Derby.

OS Grid ref: SK375351

Opening hours: Mon- Sat 7am-7pm Not accessible on Sundays.

Further information: You cannot enter The Sanctuary -only the wildlife can do that. But there are four raised viewing platforms with ramped access and interpration boards, plus 400m of open fencing through which the site can be watched. It can all be seen from within the Park and Ride car park, next to Derby County Football Stadium. Follow the Park and Ride signs to Derby County Football Stadium, or take the P&R bus from Derby city centre.
